Book review: The Internet and Young Learners

Lewis, G The Internet and Young Learners Oxford:Oxford University Press, 2004.

It is a book which contains various information and instructions to use internet as a supplementary resources for young learners’ language learning in the classroom. Within this book, the skills of computer operation, communication activities, web search activities, web creation activities, and other relevant application are introduced to teacher in order to motivate students in such a classroom. In the first section of this book, it considerably provides the ideas of instructions in using computer software and hardware since most of the young learners may not be familiar with computer operation. Secondly, it indicates the functions of using internet to motivate learners have more interactions with other participants in class. Thirdly, the function of searching online, which is widely-used in daily life, is introduced that learners can not only interact with people in class, but also have better understanding of the environment they live. Moreover, learners can integrate the skills from these lessons and apply them in their study.

Age, level, time, aims, materials, procedures, and potential variations are taken into consideration in each activity that teacher can use the suitable one for their target learners. Meanwhile, relevant resources are attached in appendix for teacher’s reference that teacher can use this book to create an internet-based classroom to enhance learners’ language ability and motivation in learning.
